This past Saturday had double the rugby action as both the Comox Valley Kickers Women’s and Men’s teams travelled to the Cowichan Valley to face off against the Cowichan Piggies. It was a game of endurance for the women’s game as both squads only had 15 players. The Piggies scored the first points of the game, but the Kickers quickly fell into their groove and answered back right away. The back line was able to use their speed which helped to create overlaps that they used to their advantage. Inside Centre Natalie Nguyen, Outside Centre Daris Tendler and Wingers Carrie Weekes and Béatrice Sylvain each scored once with Flyhalf Paula Simpson scoring twice and making 5 out of 6 conversions for a 40-15 win. “It was a closer game than the score line indicates. Cowichan had some big runs. They were at our goal line for several plays, but we had a strong defensive stance and did not let them score. Once we were able to regain possession and relieve pressure, that’s when everything started to click. Our forward pack shined in the lineouts, winning all but a few and our back line kept on attacking,” said Kickers Coach JP Lussier. In their first game of the season, the Comox Valley Men’s team found themselves playing defense more often then attacking downfield. “Cowichan is a more experienced and seasoned team. When we had possession, we ran well, and our set pieces were sound. With more practices and games under our belt, I believe that we will improve steadily. There were a lot of good takeaways from this game,” said...

The Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Football Club has announced that they will be hosting an international rugby match on the 23rd of June 2016. The Outback Barbarians are an Australian rep side made up of players from across Queensland. They are on a 4 week , 8 game tour of Western Canada and the United States. They will be visiting the Comox Valley as a part of their tour. The match is scheduled to kick off on Thursday, June 23rd at 5:30pm at the Kickers home field of Cumberland Village Park. The Kickers are in fine form having played through some tough competition in the Vancouver Island Third Division. The culmination of which resulted in a tight loss to a skilled Abbotsford team in the quarter finals of the provincials. Since that loss, the team has taken a hiatus from organized team practices though many of the players attend the touch rugby sessions held at Lower Lake Trail field on Thursday evenings, have traveled to attend BC Rugby development camps or have gone on tour themselves. Kickers head coach Dan Mills said of the friendly “We’re up against it with this team. We play in a tough physical league here on the island but southern hemisphere rugby is a different game altogether. The Australians won’t be put off by big hits. If we hope to win we’ll have to be really dialed in for the full 80 minutes.” Kickers team captain Brandon Hudson added, “This is a real test for us. We play a basic style of rugby. We’re punishing in the tackle and try to make it a war of attrition. These guys are probably going to want to spin the ball all...

With great sadness, long time Kickers alumni and friend Roc LeFort passed away suddenly September 7th 2014 in a motorbike accident. Roc was a good man and a great friend to many, at the club you could always find him involved in some intense foosball matches that went on longer than his well known poker tournaments. Or behind the bar lending a hand, and at a Saturday night social he would always be one of the last guys standing. On the field he played with his heart and for his team mates. A true club man. His family will be holding a celebration of life this Monday the 15th at 11 Mitchell road in Courtenay 1:30pm, for anyone wishing to attend. The Kickers will be putting on an informal social Saturday September 20th in his honor (exact details to follow) for those wishing to come. Greg Merchant will be organizing a foosball tourney and Roc’s jersey will be retired and hung up in the club. RIP Roc Le Fort, you will surely be missed by...
