In last weekend’s match against the Powell River Otagos, the younger members of the AFC Comox Valley Kickers shone in a win that put the club back on track after two recent losses. The club had traveled to Victoria the past two weekends losing 32-28 to the Castaway-Wanderers and 35-7 to the Velox-Valhallians, but the win over Powell River leaves the Kickers in second place in the standings with two weeks to prepare for the playoffs. They will face Cowichan at Cumberland’s Village park on April 8th @ 1p.m. This spring season has seen an influx of eager young players to the club, some of them like eighteen year-old Vince Bennett, still a student at Mark Isfeld school, electrified the crowd with a hat-trick of tries against the Powell River visitors on Sunday. Bennett who stands 6’ 2” and weights 215 pounds, plays #8 for his school team and lock for the Kickers, and when he gets the ball in hand and works up a head of steam he is difficult man to stop. His sidesteps and jinks would make any back-fielder proud. “ I love running with the ball in hand,” comments the talented youngster who looks forward to his second game of the week playing for his school side on Thursday. Nineteen year-old Curtis Parker graduated from Isfeld last year and can play anywhere in the backs. Though he has only been playing the game for a couple of years, he enjoys the contact and running with the ball in hand. He has notched a couple of tries this Spring season and is looking more...

Last weekend the CV Kickers received trys from the Hextall brothers (4), Troy Mader(2), Eli Cummins(1), Vince Bennett(2), & Brandon Huddleston(1) coupled with 6 converts supplied by Konrad Nikkel on their way to a 63 point victory over Saanich Peninsula RFC. Mader looked as though he hadn’t missed a beat after being away for most of the the Spring season. It appears that Brandon Robertson has found his niche at the prop position. However Isfield high school student, Vince Bennett stole the show from the number eight position as he ran in 2 trys and almost snagged a third. No doubt he will be a force whenever his school plays throughout the...

Cowichan Piggies handed the Kickers their first loss of the season, 28-17, thereby gaining a measure of revenge for an earlier 44-0 defeat. The Kickers couldn’t get anything going as they repeatedly shot themselves in the foot. Aaron Larrivee summed it up…”Even after penetrating their defensive line we suffered from loose support, dropped ball and bad choices.” In addition, the Kickers’ inability to consistently kick converts and penalties came back to haunt them. Congratulations to Cowichan for a well played match. Comox Valley tries were scored by Mike Magee, Leigh Burley and Nathan Holley. Andy Hextall and newcomer Curtis Parker were chosen as CV Men of the Match. Next game: Velox, Feb 26th, 1:00 PM, Village Park, Cumberland. On Saturday February 18th some of the IG Kickers Women, playing on a North Island first division select team traveled across the water to play United RFC in Coquitlum. Having beaten Abbotsford the previous week under sunny skies the North Island girls prepared for the worse as heavy rain/snow pelted down forcing players and spectators to scoop up excessive field water with garbage cans and wheel barrels. Luckily the team was able to bounce back from their rough travel and came out firing! Front row Aimee Burley, Jenna Roy and Susie Gilson dominated the opposition and won every scrum, making the ball easily playable for their backs. Outside center and power runner, Lisa Breuer scored the first try, and set up the next two, passing the ball off to team-mates Brenna Collicutt and Angela Buick. Stand-off Sam Kreeger was awarded a penalty try after being illegally brought down by the United scrum half. Fullback Arlene McGuff made the conversion resulting in a final 27-0 score. Women of the match was awarded to Lisa Breuer. The North Island girls proved they were the stronger team and with a 2-1 record, are currently second in the Division 1 standings. The girls play a fun match Saturday, Feb 25th at Village Park in Cumberland. Kick-off at noon. Next league game will take place in Nanaimo, March 10th against Kelowna. The Kickers women would like to thank Investors Group. Their continuous support is a significant factor in assuring the development of women’s rugby in the Comox...

Rugby thrives on traditions, with some fixtures between clubs in Britain going back over one hundred and fifty years. On Saturday at Cumberland Village Park the Comox Valley Kickers and the Port Alberni Black Sheep began another tradition when the two clubs played for the newly inaugurated Beaufort Cup. The two clubs hope to play annually for this new Cup in a fixture that will include every level within their organizations and will be played on a total points basis on the day. In the first Annual Beaufort Cup only the Senior Men and the Senior Women played, but in future organizers hope to include Junior as well as Mini players. Kickers “Mr. Everything”, Colin Chappell came up with the idea of the Beaufort Cup: “Just as the Beaufort Mountain range separates us, the Beaufort Cup will bring us closer together by holding this inter-club, “friendly” event to include every level of the two clubs,” said the former Bath player. “We have been trying to make this work for a number of years and have always fallen afoul of the weather, but today, in spite of a light dusting of snow, we finally held the first fixture. And, it proved a great success.” The Black Sheep arrived with over forty players in their own club bus and soon the women’s team took on the Kicker women in a Seven-a side match. The Black Sheep eventually won five tries to three, 25-15 leaving the Kicker men with a ten point deficit to make up if they hoped to be the first holders of the Cup. The men then took to...
