This past Saturday, the Comox Valley Kickers Women’s Team hosted Victoria’s Castaway Wanderers at Vanier Secondary School and earned a 45-29 win to continue their winning streak. The Kickers started off strong with an interception by Chloë Speed in the early minutes of the game which helped to set the tone. The backline utilized their speed and capitalized on opportunities with Natalie Nguyen, Daris Tendler and Speed adding a try each and Paula Simpson scoring twice. It was a very competitive game with a lot of back and forth action. With some hard hits and offloads, forwards Jessica Leck and Karli MacFarlane also added points on the board. Simpson kicked five successful conversions. “We have several returning players this season which has made it easy to continue where we left off last spring. The new players on the squad fit right in and are already making a difference. This was a hard team to play against; they were very fast and had some long runs, but our team kept it cool and always answered back. Our game flow was great, and we kept the pressure on the opposing side. I am excited to see how the team continues to improve and grow. This has been a great start to the season.” said Kickers Coach Thyssen de Goede. Both Senior Women’s and Men’s team travel to Cowichan next Saturday, which will be the Men’s first game of the season. The Comox Valley Kickers Senior (18+) Men’s and Women’s and Old Boys Programs are recruiting for this season. All skill levels are welcomed, bring your friends! Rugby is a sport that aside being the most fun to play, offers a level of social engagement that keeps people coming back. The Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club has been playing matches since as early as 1889 and continues with its proud tradition, and puts forward a mens and womens side that practice here in the valley and play on the island and sometimes on the mainland in the British Columbia Rugby Union. The season begins in mid-august with practices at Lower Lake Trail field. In September practices are held at Village Park in Cumberland as are the home games. The women begin practicing on Aug.14th on Mondays and Thursdays at 6:30 at The Lower Lake Trail fields. [notice] When: Mondays and Thursdays, 6:30pm Where: Lake Trail School (Lower Fields) Who: Men and Women of all experience levels welcome Ages: 14+ [/notice] ________________________________________________________________ Quick Version of the Rules: 6 on 6 with at least one female player on the field for each team. Play starts with a TAP at dead center field. Defense back 10M. TAGS can be made with as little as one finger anywhere on the ball carrier including the ball or the carriers clothing. A TAG creates a MARK on the field. The ball carrier must perform a ROLL BALL on the MARK, failure to do so is a turnover. The defense must retreat 5M from the MARK before attacking the ball. The DUMMY HALF must play the ball from the MARK with no delay on a tag. If the DUMMY HALF is tagged possession is turned over. Your team turns the ball over on the 6th TAG. ROUGH TAGS are a penalty. Penalties are started with a TAP, defense back 10M. If you are tagged and then pass the ball it is called a TOUCH PASS and your team turns over possession of the ball. VANCOUVER, BC - BC Rugby’s U20 women’s provincial team program will be holding their second open trial of the 2013 season on April 21st at UBC’s Wolfson Fields. The first open session was held in conjunction with BC’s senior women’s program and featured 50+ athletes in attendance. The U20 team is currently in preparation for the upcoming summer season where BC plans to compete at the National Women’s League Finals in Vancouver. It was a big weekend for the Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club. On Saturday in light rain at Village Park in Cumberland the senior women second division side United came from the lower mainland to challenge the Kickers women, and the senior men first division team Cowichan came to take on the Kickers men. In 2013 the Kickers have proudly elevated each senior team, the men taking a step up to Vancouver Island First Division, and the women a step out into a wider Second Division competition that includes teams from the lower mainland. Bold moves intended to raise the bar for rugby players and rugby fans in the Valley. That bar was set high by the visitors in a 4 hour display of rugby at its best. The Women kicked off at 11:30 and from the first whistle the intimidation from the Kickers forward pack, including some bullying runs from Sheryl Alexander, quickly forced United to adopt a wide ranging passing game, using phases of play to eventually outnumber the Kickers defense, a ploy that worked for United bringing an early try. The home team quickly answered with Molly Florian employing a deft sidestep and a quick weaving run to go in under the posts, converting her own try and maintaining a competitive scoreline. An U18 BC rep last year, Florian has recently played for Crimson Tide and she posed an ever present danger during the game leading United to take care to deny Florian space whenever possible. With steady pressure and a somewhat lopsided penalty count the score continued to widen for United, and despite excellent solid midfield tackles...

All Kickers RFC Members are invited to a pub night on January 31st (530-10 pm) at the Prime Chophouse and Wine Bar in Courtenay (see document below). It would be a good chance for players and coaches to mingle with some of the Comox Valley’s high school players, coaches and parents and also help support Vanier Boys’ upcoming trip to the Las Vegas 7’s.
