Ged Griffiths Cup comes to the Comox Valley for the first time

The BCRU Senior Club Finals started with a clash between the top two ranked teams in Women’s Division 2. Spectators, both in person and those viewing via live stream, were treated to an electric game of rugby, with moments of brilliance from both sides lighting up the field.

From the first whistle, the Comox Valley Kickers and United RFC engaged in fierce battles for possession and territory. As the game unfolded, it became evident that neither side was willing to cede ground easily, resulting in most of the game being played predominantly between each team’s 22-metre lines for much of the first half. Inside Centre, Danelle Campbell scored the first try for the Kickers by chasing down a short penalty kick attempt which Fullback Cali McKay then converted. United quickly answered back with a converted try of their own.

United managed to edge ahead by halftime scoring another try, only for the Kickers to stage a spirited comeback in the second half. Winger Sienna Stigant tied the game up with a burst down the sideline. With the match finely poised at 12-12 heading into the final minutes, the Kickers delivered the decisive blow that would shatter United’s dreams of an undefeated season. Determined, the Kickers orchestrated a well-worked team going coast to coast and end to end, culminating in Winger Jess Nikkel crossing the line to put the Kickers ahead. McKay proved her accuracy again, slotting home the conversion to seal the victory with a score of 19-12. The Ged Griffiths Cup has found its home in the Comox Valley, marking a historic first championship win for the Comox Valley Kickers Women’s team.

Back-to-Back Champions

Defending champions Comox Valley Kickers successfully retained their Men’s Division 3 crown with a nail-biter of a game over the Chilliwack Crusaders RFC, winning 24-21.

From the outset, it was clear that spectators were in for a treat as both teams unleashed their full firepower. The Kickers drew first blood with an early try from Winger Stephen Hextall, setting the tone for what would be a fiercely contested encounter. However, the Chilliwack Crusaders quickly found their rhythm, surging ahead to lead 14-5.

Undeterred, the Kickers rallied, mounting a stirring comeback that saw them narrow the deficit to just two points after a try and conversion by Kai Mills. With momentum on their side, the defending champions refused to relent with Winger Jimmy Brazier scoring a try that edged them ahead at 17-14.

Yet, Chilliwack Crusaders refused to back down, with a breakaway try down the sideline which was successfully converted, reclaiming the lead and setting the stage for a tense finale. However, seizing the moment with a wheeled scrum, Prop Derek McCubbin scored with a successful convert by Mills to take the lead. As the clock ticked down, the Comox Valley Kickers dug deep, their defense holding firm against the onslaught of attacks from the Crusaders and ensuring that the Cup would return to the Comox Valley for a second consecutive year, with a win of 24-21.

One Club. Two Cups.
