The rivalry between the Kickers and Richmond RFC has been steadily brewing, and Saturday’s encounter only served to fuel the competitive spirit between the two sides. Having experienced a regular-season loss against Richmond, the Kickers used that setback as motivation to elevate their game and came into the match better prepared. The game itself proved to be a nail-biter, with momentum swinging back and forth as each team fought tooth and nail for possession on the field. Adverse weather conditions including strong winds added a layer of challenge to the match, testing the players’ skills and adaptability. However, amidst the fierce competition, a heartwarming display of sportsmanship unfolded. Richmond RFC, in an unfortunate oversight, forgot to travel with their game jerseys. The Kickers exemplified true sportsmanship by lending their opponents jerseys to wear, albeit inside out. The excitement is palpable as the Comox Valley Kickers RFC gear up to host the highly anticipated 2024 BC Rugby Senior Club Quarterfinals. After 8 grueling months of the regular season, both the women’s and men’s teams have secured home-field advantage for the quarterfinals. The stage is now set, and the stakes are high. On Saturday, April 20 at Cumberland Village Park, the women’s team will face off against the Kelowna Crows while the men’s team will have a rematch against Richmond RFC. “We’ve been training hard and fine-tuning our game plan for this moment,” said Women’s Coach JB Nikkel. “The quarterfinals are where champions are made, and we’re ready to give it our all out there on the field.” The quarterfinal matches promise to be a spectacle of skill, determination, and raw athleticism with both teams vying for a coveted spot in the semifinals. The Comox Valley Kickers travelled to Duncan and delivered a commanding performance in their final game of the regular season, overpowering the Cowichan Piggies with a 55-14 victory. From the outset, it was evident that the Kickers came prepared to dominate on the field. Their relentless offensive onslaught and a rock-solid defense proved too much for the Cowichan side to handle. Despite the home team’s valiant efforts, the Piggies found themselves continually on their back foot and scrambling on defense. The Kickers executed their game plan and showcased exceptional teamwork throughout the game, moving the ball well and executing their plays with finesse. Their fluid passing and relentless pressure allowed them to consistently break through Cowichan’s defense. Setting the tone early was Lock Kristin Johnson who scored the first try of the game. Fullback Cali McKay’s spectacular performance of three tries and four conversions earned her Best Back of the game. Strong scrums and powerful runs earned Jessica Leck the Best Forward of the game. Additionally, Jess Nikkel and Sienna Stigant demonstrated their prowess as formidable wingers, utilizing their speed and evasion skills to cross the try line three and two times respectively. The Comox Valley Kickers RFC’s new jerseys have finally been unveiled! The Comox Valley Kickers women’s team recently held a jersey presentation ceremony on their road trip to Richmond on the BC Ferries deck. The atmosphere was electric as players stepped up one by one, proudly showcasing the vibrant and innovative jerseys that would be their armor for the battles ahead. Designed with a nod to tradition yet infused with some Comox Valley flair, namely the image of the Comox Glacier on the back of the jerseys. Captain Natalie Nguyen expressed her delight at the unveiling, highlighting the meticulous planning and dedication that went into creating the new designs. “Our jerseys are not just pieces of fabric; they represent the spirit and identity of our club. In a display of sheer dominance, the Comox Valley Kickers Women’s rugby team delivered an impressive performance as they traveled to the mainland to clash against RichLions, a combined side from Richmond RFC and Delta’s Brit Lions. The opposing side had a shortage of players which means that the game format had to change from 15-a-side with two forty-minute halves to 12-a-side with three 20-minute periods. The change to the game format did not phase the Kickers as from the opening whistle, it was abundantly clear that the women were focused and determined. Their start was nothing short of overwhelming, as they swiftly seized control of the match and left no doubt as to the outcome, securing a remarkable victory with a final score of 83-7. The match showcased an impressive display of skill and teamwork, particularly in the art of offloading, which proved to be instrumental in creating scoring opportunities. Captain Natalie Nguyen had the game’s opening try from a beautiful series of offloads. This try served as a catalyst, igniting a spark that opened up the floodgates for a deluge of scoring opportunities. Tries were then scored by Outside Centre Jess Nikkel and Winger Sienna Stigant.
