Some members of the Comox Valley Kickers RFC supporting the club’s first blood drive. The Comox Valley Kickers RFC has taken a significant step in supporting the most vulnerable members of the community by enrolling in the Canadian Blood Services’ Partners for Life program. On Wednesday, November 1, thirteen members, representing about a quarter of the club’s total, gathered at the Florence Filberg Centre to participate in a blood donation drive, a heartfelt effort to raise awareness and assist those in need. Derek McCubbin, a longstanding member of the Comox Valley Kickers RFC, championed this initiative. “As the community supports our rugby club, we wanted to find ways we can give back to the community,” says McCubbin. “Organizing a blood drive amongst our members made sense. The need for blood is constant and can be lifesaving.” The blood drive served as a testament to the team’s collective dedication to making a tangible impact outside the rugby field. With some members reaching significant milestones, having donated for the 30th or 40th time, the event also welcomed four first-time donors within the group, setting an inspiring example for others to follow suit. The Comox Valley Kickers Women’s Rugby Team roared to victory in their highly-anticipated home opener at Cumberland Village Park, defeating the Nanaimo Hornets with a final score of 31-17. Tries were scored by Cali McKay (2), Jenn Lund, Hazel Bice, and Jess Nikkel with McKay adding 3 successful converts. After a minor delay due to frost on the field, the game began with enthusiastic fans and supporters on the sidelines waving banners and cheering on the home team. From the kickoff, the game promised an intense showdown, with both teams exhibiting exceptional skill and determination. The Kickers displayed impressive teamwork, dominating the field with their strategic plays and cohesive coordination. Their relentless efforts on offense and defense were evident, creating opportunities and effectively capitalizing on them throughout the game. The first half of the game was a closely contested battle. The score remained tight as the players showcased their athleticism and tactical manoeuvres. However, as the game progressed, the home team gained momentum, executing precise passes, strategic runs, and solid defensive plays that kept the opponents at bay. The second half of the game was filled with intensity. The Kickers’ resilience and unwavering determination became increasingly evident as they surged forward, widening the score gap with a series of tries. The Hornets fought valiantly to regain control of the match, but the Kickers resolve and exceptional performance proved to be a tough challenge to overcome. This past Saturday, both Comox Valley Kickers teams traveled to Victoria to start their seasons. The men’s team secured a dominant 48-12 victory over Castaway Wanderers at Windsor Park, while the women’s team fell just short, with a final score of 19-12 against JBAA at MacDonald Park. Men’s Team Triumphs with Impressive 48-12 Victory The men’s team had a spectacular performance that firmly set the tone for the season ahead. Taking on their opponents with ferocity and precision, they secured a resounding 48-12 victory. Tries were scored by Devon Moore (3), Ben Bekk (2), Brandon Hudson, Kyle Christensen, and Kai Mills. Converts were added by Kyle Hall (2) and Mills (2). Right from the kick-off, the men’s team established their dominance on the field. Their unrelenting offensive play and solid defense kept the opponents at bay, keeping them scoreless at half. CW attempted to mount a comeback with two quick tries to start the second half, but the Kickers were quick to answer back and continually shut them down, en route to a convincing win. The local rugby community is reaping the benefits of a generous gesture from one of its own, as respected physiotherapist Shadi Fleifel MPT, FDN/IMS volunteered his time to host an athletic taping clinic for the Comox Valley Kickers RFC this past Sunday. Rugby is a physically demanding sport and injuries can be part of the game. This clinic was extremely useful as it provided players with the opportunity to acquire practical knowhow and practice various taping techniques firsthand. Shadi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at Western University in London Ontario, before going to Perth, Australia to complete his Master’s degree in Physiotherapy in 2008. The clinic was held at Ascent Physiotherapy, located in the downtown Comox core at 141A Nordin Street, where Shadi has been based out of since 2018. The clinic consisted of Shadi demonstrating a range of taping methods, emphasizing the importance in preventing common rugby injuries, such as sprains, strains, and ligament damage. Players were given hands-on training, learning the art of taping ankles, knees, shoulders, and wrists. The clinic also covered topics like taping for support, stability, and post-injury recovery. Comox Valley Kickers President, Aaron L’Arrivee, was effusive in his praise for Shadi’s efforts. “We’re incredibly fortunate to have someone of Shadi’s caliber in our community. The Comox Valley Kickers Women’s team traveled to MacDonald Park for the first rugby action of the season. James Bay Athletic Association (JBAA) played host to the opening pre-season rugby tournament over the weekend. The tournament featured five rugby clubs from across Vancouver Island taking part: JBAA, Westshore, Castaway Wanderers, Nanaimo, and Comox. The tournament featured a round-robin format, guaranteeing each team multiple matches and ample opportunities to dust off some rust, work on some chemistry, and showcase their skills. The games were highly competitive, with players displaying outstanding athleticism, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the weekend. The tournament provided players with valuable pre-season experience and gave the local community a reason to come together and celebrate the spirit of sports. Spectators young and old came out to support a great day of rugby. Speaking after the tournament, Co-Captain of the Comox Valley Kickers Women’s team, Natalie Nguyen said, “This year’s pre-season tournament exceeded our expectations. The level of competition was outstanding. We are excited to build on this success as we head into the upcoming season.” With the pre-season tournament at MacDonald Park serving as a thrilling prologue, rugby players and fans are both now eagerly anticipating the official start of the season.
