CLUB STALWART TAKES OVER AS CLUB COACH

Aaron L’Arrive has been with the Comox Valley Kickers for half of his twenty-eight years and he has done every job asked of him from bartending, to managing theequipment, to cleaning up after any and every kind of club function. Now he has stepped up to take on the task of coaching the Senior Men’s team when recent knee surgery forced his early retirement from playing. “I think I offer a fresh perspective to the coaching role,” says the former hook. “In the past we have gone out and trained and done drills but no one has ever explained why we’re doing this stuff. I intend relating everything to game situations and explaining why we’re doing it. I want to make it interesting and to let people have fun while they’re doing it.” Aaron joined the club as a Junior Kicker out of HighlandSchoolin 1997 following in the footsteps of his elder brothers Justin and Michael for the Kickers in the early ‘90s. “In those days we would play our Junior game and then suit up for the men’s team. We got lots of game time.” “I want to change the Kickers style of play and use our hands more, have quicker offload, keep the ball up off the ground and not just pound our way up field by rucking and mauling. It will require more fitness but it will be a much more enjoyable game to play and to watch,” says the new coach. “As someone who has just retired and as someone who is a peer of most of the guys will be coaching, I can’t walk...

IRB Coaching Newsletter – Volume 24 (for those interested in coaching)

Dear Fellow Coaches, Now that 2011 has got under way we can look forward to a very exciting year with the IRB World Cup being held in New Zealand in October and November. What suprises and drama will this World Cup bring? In the IRB World Rugby Yearbook, Victor Matfield has written an interesting article on what it takes to win a World Cup. He makes the very valid point that whereas in France, players during the tournament could move around Paris in relative peace and quiet, that won't be the case in New Zealand where rugby is such huge part of the country's makeup. Players popping out of their hotel for a quiet coffee will be the centre of attention and will have to handle being in the spotlight all the time! It will all add to the tremendous pressure on players during the tournament. Spare a thought for the All Blacks. Imagine the pressure they will be under on home ground after not winning the tournament since the first World Cup in 1987! If they win in these conditions they will be worthy champions! To read the full article please click on this link Victor Matfield or go to Rugbyworldcup.com where you will find all the information and news about 2011 World Cup. In a recent edition of this newsletter we talked about how essential and sometimes challenging the referees job is at all levels of the game. There was a lot of response from players and referees expressing views on how referees needed to be supported more, particularly by supporters. I am delighted to say a very helpful online...

PLANNING SESSION SETS GOALS FOR KICKERS’ FUTURE

PLANNING SESSION SETS GOALS FOR KICKERS’ FUTURE

At a day-long planning session on Saturday January, 22 entitled, “Kicking the Kickers into the Future” the Comox Valley Kickers R.F.C. established some goals for future growth. Held at the magnificent Forbidden Plateau Lodge, eighteen prominent club members discussed, debated and deliberated all day under the very capable leadership of facilitator Dr. Don Hall and arrived at some long and short-term goals the participants felt the club needs to address in order for the club to reach its full potential. After much constructive discussion the participants at the Planning Session concluded that the club has five main Goals that need to be addressed. Working Committees are to be established from a wide cross-section of club members. Some of the goals are short-term and some long-term but it is important that the volunteer Committee Chairpersons begin selecting their committees as soon as possible so that they can discuss priorities and that these goals can be achieved. Once the Committees have met and have created plans, time-lines and budgets within their mandates, they will report to the Club Executive for approval and implementation. If any club member feels they want to participate in this process and can make a commitment to contribution to any of the following committees, please inform President Greg Merchant (250-702-4273 or gmerchant@wedler.com) of your willingness to help the club move forward.   KICKERS FIVESHORT- AND LONG-TERM GOALS: 1.     FACILITIES A.   Clubhouse: a.     Showers b.     Bathrooms c.     Kitchen/Bar d.     Change Rooms e.     Finishing work f.       Permanent Satellite Dish set-up               B.
