The Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club capped off summer and the touch rugby season with a day of fun and friendly competition at the 3rd Annual Co-Ed Touch Tournament, held on Saturday, August 30, at Lewis Park in Courtenay.
This year’s tournament had eight teams battle it out. Teams traveled from across Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast to take part. Campbell River was represented by ORNERY and Yahoos, Powell River fielded the PR Otago, and Courtenay’s own Untouchables played for the hometown crowd. The teams were joined by four mixed squads— Globo Gym, Golden Eye, Midnight Syndicate, and Wasabi Warriors—as individuals were able to register as singles to participate in this tournament.
Each side played three pool games, with results setting the stage for playoff seedings. The format kept matches close and competitive, where every try scored and every defensive stand carried weight. The playoffs brought even tighter matches, culminating in an all-Campbell River final where ORNERY emerged victorious, claiming the coveted trophy.
Families, friends, and fans came out in strong numbers and enjoyed a lively beer garden while stocking up on Kickers merchandise. Mignon & Kie Café and Eatery delivered a delicious catered lunch, while draw prizes donated by Alitis Investment Counsel added to the fun.
“This tournament just keeps getting bigger and better,” said Tournament Organizer, Natalie Nguyen. “It’s about bringing people together, giving everyone a chance to play, and celebrating the non-contact version of the sport.”
With growing turnout year after year, the Co-Ed Touch Tournament has quickly become a staple of summer in the Comox Valley. The Kickers are already looking forward to building on this success for next year’s event.
With the touch rugby season now wrapped up, attention shifts to the Kickers’ contact rugby season. Practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30–8:00 p.m. at Cumberland Village Park, and newcomers are always welcome. Whether you’re a seasoned player or someone looking to try rugby for the first time, it’s the perfect time to get involved and be part of the growing rugby community in the Comox Valley.
