Rugby Rascals Jamboree in Nanaimo Features More Than 120 Players!

What a day we had in Nanaimo! Six U11 teams (Castaways-Victoria, Velox-Victoria, Cowichan, Nanaimo, Campbell River and the Comox Valley Kickers) + 4 U13 + 4U9 teams (our U9 player hooked-up with Cowichan for his first rugby game) =130 players with 5 separate games being played at any one time!  All our kids played with heart. This was our second game of contact as a club and the first game for 5 of our new players. Everyone did well but a special congratulation to those first time players who matched our overall commitment and enthusiasm. We learned a lot yesterday and still had fun.  Thanks to all the parents who made the trip and supported their player, to Ona Thorington who kept things rolling as well as everyone else who lent a helping hand. Special thanks to Melissa McLachlan for the pics which are posted on our Facebook page at:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Comox-Valley-Rugby-Rascals/261788750608920 A reminder that this Wednesday’s practice is at 5:00 PM @ Fallen Alders Hall on Royston Road with our Sunday practice scheduled for 1:00 PM @ Comox Recreation Centre. Next jamboree: Cowichan will host at Shawnigan Lake April 7th at 10:00 AM instead of at Cowichan on March 24th (Spring Break). This means a long day for ourselves and CR however it promises to be a festive occasion held on the same pitch as Canada has played on in past years, plus our attendance increases the probability of Victoria teams coming here in succeeding years....

Rugby Rascals – Join our 2013 Jamborees!

Rugby is an amazing sport. It builds positive, strong attributes on a variety of levels. It promotes, first and foremost, team play. There are 15 players on the field, working towards a shared goal and supporting each other every step of the way. It also develops all kinds of muscles, ball skills, communication skills and hand-eye coordination. All things that benefit our little growing  stars a.k.a. the Comox Valley Rugby Rascals. Colin Chappell recognized through Volunteer Appreciation Program

Colin Chappell recognized through Volunteer Appreciation Program

Original article by Andrew Smith, BC Rugby Communications  COMOX, BC –  Our latest BC Rugby First XV Volunteer currently resides in the Comox Valley where he spends his time supporting the Kickers mini rugby program, the Youth and Women’s teams and the North Island Tsunami Academy program. Colin Chappell is also the VP for the Vancouver Island Rugby Union’s Youth and Mini programs and has served as the VIRU juniors league coordinator, often a thankless task that requires plenty of hours during the season. “Colin has put in a huge amount of effort getting the fall junior rugby program underway, running a 7-a-side/10-a-side tournament for the first two weeks and then sorting out a number of challenges for initiating the 15-a-side competitions,” said VIRU President Andrew Spray. “He has done a first class job since taking over the position last February.” Chappell first came to Vancouver Island in 1981 on a rugby tour and eventually moved to Nanaimo in 1982 and played with the Hornets until ’85. Once his playing career wrapped up, Chappell became involved as a volunteer and refereed until 1989. During the ’90s Chappell was heavily involved in volunteering for the Olympic Canoeing program as his son was a paddler. After a series of moves for work that took him across the province, Chappell returned to the Island where he has put down roots in Comox and has been volunteering in the local community since 2006. We caught up with our latest XV Volunteer and this is what he had to say… How long have you been involved as a volunteer with rugby? I stopped playing...
