Comox Valley Kickers Seize Nail-biting Road Victories

Comox Valley Kickers Seize Nail-biting Road Victories

In a tense battle against the Nanaimo Hornets, the Comox Valley Kickers Women’s rugby team emerged victorious with a narrow 20-15 win, securing the prestigious Gudmundseth Shield. Despite the challenging weather conditions of rain and mud, the Kickers displayed resilience, with Ava Perkins, Cali McKay, and Hazel Bice scoring critical tries, including a dramatic winning try on the last play of the game.   This is the first time the Kickers Women have held the Gudmundseth Shield. They will retain it until another Vancouver Island Rugby Union team defeats the Kickers on their home turf. The Hornets had previously held The Shield since November 2022.   Coach JB Nikkel lauded the team’s defensive prowess, stating, “Defense was definitely our game. Despite the soggy conditions, our players remained disciplined and focused, ensuring our defensive line held strong.” He also acknowledged the efforts of the backline, though hampered by the weather, in making significant runs.   Looking forward, Nikkel emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum, stating, “With this victory, we turn our focus to the next challenges ahead.” The Kickers Women’s team has secured home field advantage for the first round of playoffs, scheduled for April 20th at Cumberland Village Park.   Men’s Team Extends Winning Streak to Six Games   In a hard-fought contest against Burnaby Lake Rugby Club, the Comox Valley Kickers Men’s rugby team emerged triumphant with a 34-17 win in damp conditions. Despite trailing 17-15 at halftime, the Kickers rallied and pulled ahead in the second half. Tries were scored by Jimmy Brazier, Ben Bekk, Devon Moore, Craig Rice, and Riley Gaudet. Roc Le Fort 1964-2014

Roc Le Fort 1964-2014

With great sadness, long time Kickers alumni and friend Roc LeFort passed away suddenly September 7th 2014 in a motorbike accident. Roc was a good man and a great friend to many, at the club you could always find him involved in some intense foosball matches that went on longer than his well known poker tournaments. Or behind the bar lending a hand, and at a Saturday night social he would always be one of the last guys standing. On the field he played with his heart and for his team mates. A true club man. His family will be holding a celebration of life this Monday the 15th at 11 Mitchell road in Courtenay 1:30pm, for anyone wishing to attend. The Kickers will be putting on an informal social Saturday September 20th in his honor (exact details to follow) for those wishing to come. Greg Merchant will be organizing a foosball tourney and Roc’s jersey will be retired and hung up in the club. RIP Roc Le Fort, you will surely be missed by...
Kickers Player off to National Championships

Kickers Player off to National Championships

Meet Lauren Sargent, captain of the Kickers U18 Women’s team.  Lauren started playing rugby a mere three years ago at Vanier Secondary School- and since then has helped in the growth of the Kickers Junior Girls Program, lead her high school team to a provincial championship, represented BC at the U16 level, Tsunami U16 and U18, BC Banshees at Vegas 7’s, and just recently the Summer Games team and the BC U18 squad . Lauren is a natural leader on the field as scrum half and says her favorite thing about the game is the atmosphere and the enjoyment of helping others succeed their goals. ” Its like a stress reliever, I always smile playing rugby, I love it. I could never stop” she says.  At 17 she has already been giving back to the sport she loves, refereeing younger games and lending a hand with our mini rugby programs. The BC U18 team will be heading to Calgary to compete in the National Championships August 4th to 7th, and hopefully bring home a gold trophy. Lauren and her team are excited for this opportunity and have been working hard, however representing your province isn’t free. Each player has been given the opportunity to raise money that will go directly to the cost of their contribution, and with a $100 donation your name or business name will be featured on poster of the BC Team put up all over the region. If you are interested in helping Lauren with her journey to success please contact her at...
