This past weekend marked a pivotal stretch for the Comox Valley Kickers as both the women’s and men’s teams took to the field in challenging circumstances. The women faced an early morning trip to Port Alberni to meet United RFC in a rain-soaked contest that tested their strength, structure, and ball-handling under pressure. Meanwhile, the men traveled to Victoria to contest the second game of the Konny’s Axes Memorial Shield against Westshore in a match that would determine the aggregate winner of the home-and-away series. Both games offered a hard look at how the Kickers stack up against strong opposition and provided key takeaways as the season moves into its crucial second half.
Kickers Women Remain Undefeated with Victory over United
What was meant to be a home fixture turned into a road test for the Comox Valley Kickers women on the weekend, as the closure of Cumberland Village Park forced a venue change. The team made the trip west to Port Alberni, where they were welcomed by the Black Sheep, whose hospitality ensured the match could go ahead despite challenging conditions.
The contest carried extra significance. The Kickers faced United RFC, a familiar opponent from the 2023/2024 Division 2 finals, with both sides now competing in Division 1. An early 10:30 a.m. kickoff was scheduled to accommodate United’s travel from the mainland, adding another layer to an already demanding day.
Heavy rain set the tone from the opening whistle, turning the match into a gritty battle defined by physicality and discipline rather than flair. Both teams traded phases through long stretches of back-and-forth rugby, with sound tackling, quick ruck speed, and ball retention proving fundamental. Possession was fiercely contested, and momentum shifted repeatedly as neither side was willing to yield ground easily.
At times, the game descended into chaos, with slippery conditions making handling and decision-making difficult. As the Kickers settled into the match, however, their structure began to assert itself. Improved communication and composure allowed them to convert pressure into points.
Sophia Julien led the scoring with three tries, with Jess Nikkel adding two, both capitalizing on sustained attacking phases and strong support play. Cali McKay’s boot proved decisive, as she controlled territory and slotted four conversions in a composed kicking display despite the rain, with the final score being 33-12.
Beyond the result, the match carried added importance as one of only two crossover games this season against a mainland opponent during the regular season, offering a valuable benchmark for where the Kickers truly stand in Division 1. With league play often split by geography, opportunities to measure local competition against mainland sides are limited, making this fixture a critical test of intensity, structure, and depth. The hard-fought nature of the game, combined with the Kickers’ ability to execute under pressure and in difficult conditions, provided meaningful insight into how the team stacks up beyond the Island and what standards will be required as the season moves closer to playoffs.
Kickers Fall to Westshore in Konny’s Axes Memorial Shield Clash
The Comox Valley Kickers men faced a stern test on Saturday as they traveled south to Juan de Fuca Sports Field for the second and deciding match of the Konny’s Axes Memorial Shield series against Westshore RFC. Kickoff was set for 12:45 p.m., with the shield awarded on aggregate scoring across the home-and-away series between the two clubs Konny once represented.
From the opening whistle, Westshore set the tone with a composed and highly structured approach. Their forwards laid a solid platform at the breakdown, while the backs moved the ball with precision and purpose, making defensive gaps hard to find. The cohesion between units proved decisive, as sustained pressure kept the Kickers pinned in their own half for long stretches.
The Kickers showed resilience and moments of attacking promise, but Westshore’s organization and line speed repeatedly shut down opportunities before they could fully develop. Chances were limited in trying to break through Westshore’s defensive wall.
Craig Whiley opened the scoring for the Kickers with a well-earned try, briefly injecting momentum into the contest. Kyle Hall later crossed the line as the Kickers continued to push for answers against a disciplined opponent and converted his own try. Despite the effort, Westshore maintained control of the match, pulling away on the scoreboard to secure a 43–12 victory and claim the Konny’s Axes Memorial Shield.
While the outcome was not what the Kickers hoped for, the fixture served as a valuable test against one of the league’s top sides.
