The Comox Valley Kickers women’s rugby team saw their undefeated regular season come to an end in a hard-fought semi-final matchup, falling 37–5 to a strong Capilano RFC side this past Saturday in Nanaimo.
With no field availability in the Comox Valley, the neutral-site match came with added travel and preparation challenges. The Kickers extended their thanks to Nanaimo Hornets RFC for their hospitality in hosting the fixture on a hot, taxing day that tested both sides’ endurance.
Despite the scoreline, the Kickers showed plenty of fight, particularly up front. Their scrum was a consistent source of strength, holding firm under pressure and at times earning valuable territory. In the lineouts, the team competed well, disrupting Capilano’s ball and securing their own throws with confidence, keeping themselves within reach during key stretches of the match.
Play moved back and forth through much of the game, with both teams trading possession and territory. However, the Kickers struggled to turn promising field position into points. Several trips into Capilano’s 22 went unrewarded, as handling errors and strong defensive pressure from Capilano stalled attacking momentum.
“Capilano was the better team on this day,” Coach Pete Morton. “We had our chances but couldn’t quite get anything going when it mattered.”
The Kickers’ lone try came from Cali McKay, who broke through for the team’s only points in an otherwise tightly contested effort.
While the semi-final result was not what the Kickers had hoped for, it does little to overshadow what has been a standout season. After many seasons competing in Division 2, the Kickers made a successful step up to Division 1 this year, proving they can compete with the league’s top teams.
“There’s a lot to be proud of,” Coach Morton said. “This group of women has worked incredibly hard all season.”
