Kickers Men Close Out First Half of Season with 40–22 Victory Over JBAA

Dec 7, 2025

With McDonald Park transformed into a mud pit, the Comox Valley Kickers battled their way to a hard-earned 40–22 win over James Bay Athletic Association (JBAA) in their final match of the half.

From the opening whistle, it was clear that this would be no showcase of fast-paced running rugby. Both teams were forced to ditch finesse for pure grit. Players struggled to find their footing, the ball skidded unpredictably across the saturated grass, and any attempt at a tactical kick died abruptly in the muck. The field offered little to no bounce, nullifying kicking meters and shifting the match into a contest of physicality and discipline.

Despite the challenging terrain, the Kickers capitalized on their opportunities. Ryan Beauchamp powered over the try line twice, with Simon Crowe, Stephen Hextall, Kyle Hall, and Justin Thomson each added tries of their own, giving Comox Valley a solid attacking spread across the roster. Hall delivered a masterclass in precision kicking, converting 5 of 6 attempts. With the ball caked in mud and the footing far from stable, his accuracy proved crucial in maintaining Comox Valley’s lead as the game tightened in the second half.

In the set piece, Craig Whiley emerged as a standout force, controlling the lineouts with a commanding presence. His dominance in the air posed such a problem for JBAA that, by the second half, they began opting to scrum instead of kicking for touch.

JBAA, true to form, fought hard and kept themselves within striking distance. Their forwards punched in a series of strong carries. They found ways to score through sustained pressure, but the Kickers’ defensive resilience prevented them from stringing together enough momentum to close the gap.

The game’s defining tone, however, was set squarely by the mud—forcing a brand of rugby that favored toughness over technique. Every meter gained was earned, every carry was a collision, and every breakdown was a battle of willpower. The Kickers embraced the chaos, leaned into the physicality, and ultimately outworked their opponents in the areas that mattered.

As the final whistle blew, players on both sides were nearly unrecognizable—covered head to toe in mud, exhausted but smiling. For the Kickers, this performance was more than just a win. It was a statement of character: that when conditions get ugly, they can rise to the occasion and grind out results.

Prop Jesse Ramsay summed it up simply after the match: “The boys dug deep and showed real heart, turning a shaky start to the second half into a controlled finish to make sure we secured the win.”

With a 40–22 victory to close out the first half of the season, the Comox Valley Kickers head into the winter break confident.
