The Comox Valley Kickers RFC are through to the BCRU Women’s Division 1 semi-finals after a hard-fought 24–7 win over United RFC!
The Kickers controlled territory for long stretches, pinning United deep in their own half for much of the contest. Handling errors at key moments and a disciplined, well-organized United defensive line repeatedly denied the Kickers the chance to turn pressure into points. Time and again, promising attacking sequences broke down just short of the try line, forcing the home side to reset and rebuild. While the territorial advantage was undeniable, the inability to capitalize left the contest finely balanced, with the home side holding a slim 5–0 lead at halftime.
That lone first-half breakthrough came courtesy of Cali McKay, who powered over for the opening try with an impressive individual effort. It was a deserved reward for a Kickers side that controlled possession but lacked finishing precision.
The second half saw the dam finally begin to crack.
Sophia Julien added the next try in impressive fashion, finishing off a sweeping movement that showcased the Kickers’ ability to stretch United’s defensive line and exploit space out wide. It was a glimpse of the attacking cohesion that had been missing in the first half of the match. Aliya Liesch added another try through sharp support play, staying alert to the developing attack and positioning herself perfectly to receive the offload before crossing the line. McKay added her second try of the afternoon, while also converting two kicks. By this stage, the Kickers had settled into a strong attacking rhythm, and the scoreboard finally started to mirror the sustained territorial control they had been exerting throughout the match.
To their credit, United refused to fold. They were beginning to show signs of fatigue after prolonged defensive stands but still managed a late response with a converted try. However, it served primarily as consolation in a match where they were forced to defend for long periods deep in their own half.
While the final 24–7 scoreline suggests a comfortable victory, it tells only part of the story. For long stretches, this was a grinding, stop-start affair in which the Kickers struggled to convert opportunity into output.
There is little time to dwell on imperfections. The Kickers now turn their attention to a challenging semi-final matchup against Capilano RFC. Adding another layer of difficulty, the team will be without home-field advantage. With no fields available in the Comox Valley on May 2, the semi-final will be played in Nanaimo with a place in the championship final on the line.
