Kickers Fall to CW in Second-Half Opener

Feb 3, 2025

The Comox Valley Kickers men’s rugby team faced a tough restart to their season, falling 14-36 to Castaway Wanderers (CW) this past weekend. Despite flashes of promise, the Kickers were ultimately outplayed by a well-drilled CW side that capitalized on their opportunities.

Travelling to Oak Bay for their first fixture of the second half of the rugby season, the Kickers knew they were in for a battle. CW, playing with precision and intensity, struck early, forcing the visitors onto the back foot. The home side controlled possession and territory for much of the first half, with the Kickers struggling to find an attacking rhythm.

However, when the Kickers found space, they made it count. Winger Stephen Hextall powered through the defensive line to notch the Kickers’ first try of the match, a moment that briefly swung momentum in their favor. Kyle Hall’s conversion kept them within reach, but CW responded swiftly, punishing defensive lapses.

The second half saw a determined effort from the Kickers, with Flyhalf Justin Thomson adding another try. Again, Hall’s boot was accurate, but CW’s structured attack proved too much to handle. The hosts continued to dictate play, stretching the defense and exploiting gaps with quick ball movement.

Despite the defeat, there were positives to take from the match. The Kickers showcased strength in set pieces and flashes of attacking intent. As they look ahead to their next fixture, tightening up defensively and improving consistency will be key to closing the gap.

Next up, the Kickers men will aim to regroup and sharpen their execution as the season progresses. On February 8, they travel to Cowichan, seeking to bounce back with a stronger performance. Meanwhile, the Comox Valley Kickers women’s team will be away to CW.
