The Comox Valley Kickers men’s team fell to the visiting Castaway-Wanderers (“CW”) 45-12 at Cumberland Village Park this past Saturday. A scoreline that did not reflect the game as stated by the CW captain at the post-game social. The Kickers came out strong, applying pressure on offense and standing their ground on defense, but unfortunately, the Kickers could not capitalize on their opportunities to gain any momentum.
Some highlights of the game included the Kickers showing an impressive but inconsistent offload game while challenging CW at the breakdown. This was exemplified with a line break from an offload to Craig Whiley, who ran for 50 meters, including a chip and chase from the second row player. This was one of many impressive runs from the Pride of Parramatta. Other standout performances included Thomas Gregory, who was a menace all over the pitch with his solid defence. Will Perry, as always, was solid on offence and consistent on defence with tackles that could be heard from the sideline. Joe Wright, in his first start with the senior men’s team, was chosen as the forward of the day. Ryan Bickerstaff was the back of the day with his sneaky breaks from the ruck. Tries were scored by Ryan Beauchamp and Derek McCubbin, with Kyle Hall adding 1 conversion.
After the match, when asked for his thoughts on the game, Coach Tim Quek replied, “It wasn’t just CW that thought the scoreline didn’t reflect the game. If we executed in the red zone, the outcome could have been very different.”
Join us for a double header at Cumberland Village Park where the undefeated women’s team will be hosting James Bay at 11:15 and the men will play Westshore at 1:00.
