Comox Valley Kickers Earn Split Results Against Bayside Sharks

Oct 26, 2025

It was a day of mixed results for the Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club as both the women’s and men’s teams travelled to the mainland this past weekend to take on the Bayside Sharks at South Surrey Athletic Park. The women opened their regular season with a convincing 41–12 victory, while the men faced a tough Bayside side, falling 10–69.

For the women, it was an ideal start to their league campaign. The Kickers showcased pace, structure, and strong teamwork throughout the match, controlling the flow of play and capitalizing on their scoring opportunities. Tries were scored by Sophie Julien (3), Monique Coffey (2), and Lauren Quinn, with Cali McKay adding a penalty kick and four conversions to round out the scoreline.

The win also highlighted the importance of grassroots rugby and the strength of community within the club. The women’s team fielded two sets of sisters and even a mother-daughter duo — a reflection of how the sport continues to bring generations together both on and off the pitch.

Coach Andrew Stigant praised the team’s composure. “We played our game and proved that we belong in Division 1. The teamwork, communication, and belief in each other made all the difference out there.”

On the men’s side, it was a challenging outing against a fast and disciplined Bayside squad. Despite the tough scoreline, the Kickers showed grit and flashes of solid play, with tries scored by Devon Moore and Derek McCubbin.

Coach Tim Quek acknowledged the result but focused on the lessons learned. “Bayside was the better team, but it was not all for naught. We learned a lot about our game and will continue to work to improve.”

Both teams will be back in action on November 1. The women will host Oak Bay’s Castaway Wanderers at Cumberland Village Park, while the men will be on the road to Port Alberni Black Sheep.

The Comox Valley Kickers practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30–8:00 p.m. at Cumberland Village Park. New players are always welcome — no experience required.
