Comox Valley Kickers Men’s Rugby Team Faces Tough Start to Season

The Comox Valley Kickers men’s rugby team kicked off their 2024/2025 season on the road, facing a tough James Bay Athletic Association (JBAA) side in Victoria. Originally scheduled to be played at home, logistical challenges forced the Kickers to move their opening game down island. JBAA were accommodating to  Despite the change of venue, the Kickers were eager to test themselves in a new division.  However, JBAA proved to be a formidable opponent, delivering a dominant performance and defeating the Kickers 42-0. Kickers’ captain, Kyle Hall, acknowledged the difficulty of the match but remained positive about the season ahead. “We knew it was going to be a tough game. James Bay has a lot of experience, and they showed it today. But this is just the start for us. We’ll take this as a learning experience and bounce back stronger.” The Kickers were able to dominate the scrums and were very strong in the line outs, but they struggled to contain the relentless pressure from James Bay, who used their speed and tactical play to control the game from start to finish. Looking ahead, the Comox Valley Kickers will regroup and prepare for their next match with hopes of turning the tide. The Comox Valley Kickers are coming off a historic season that saw both their men’s and women’s teams win the provincial championships in their respective divisions. With the men winning back to back Division 3 titles, this has propelled them to Division 1, marking a significant milestone in the club’s history. 2nd Annual Comox Valley Kickers Co-Ed Touch Rugby Tournament: A Day of Fun, Sun, and Rugby!

The Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club proudly hosted their 2nd Annual Co-Ed Touch Rugby Tournament on Saturday, August 17 at Lewis Park, marking the perfect end to their touch rugby season. The tournament saw six teams taking to the field, including three single teams from the Comox Valley, and one from Powell River, Oyster River North, and Nanaimo. In a 6v6 format, with a minimum of one female player on the field at a time, each team was guaranteed three games, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals and playing for a shot at the championship. After a day full of competitive and fun-filled matches, the Nanaimo Hornets emerged victorious, claiming the coveted tournament trophy and bragging rights until next year. This event is one of the major fundraisers for the Comox Valley Kickers RFC. None of this would have been possible without the incredible efforts of our volunteers. A huge thank you to Natalie Nguyen and Jesse Ramsay for coordinating the event, Jess Nikkel for scorekeeping and game commentary, Jessica Leck for selling tickets and merchandise, Kaitlyn Hazelman for running the beer garden, and Talon Peters and Stephen Hextall for grilling on the BBQ.  The games also could not have happened without our referees. A standing ovation goes to Trevor McGuire, Pete Morton, Tim Quek, Brandon Hudson, Nguyen, and Ramsay. The efforts of our volunteers ensured the event ran smoothly and was a great success. The Return to the Pitch: Rugby Practices Are Back in Full Swing!

After a well-deserved off-season, it’s time to lace up those boots, dust off the jerseys, and get back into the swing of things because rugby practices are officially back! For the month of August, practices will be: Tuesdays from 6:30PM - 8:00PM at Woodcote Park & Thursdays from 7:00PM - 8:30PM at Woodcote Park. In September, practices will move to Cumberland Village Park and run Tuesday & Thursday from 6:30PM - 8:00PM. Rugby is more than just a sport; it’s a community. There is a spot on the team for everyone. No experience is required. For new players, this is the perfect time to integrate into the squad. Veterans will be there to offer guidance and share their experiences. As we kick off the new season, it’s essential to remember that rugby is as much about enjoyment as it is about competition.
