The Comox Valley Kickers Women’s team, sporting their marvellous new uniforms, suffered a rude awakening following its two month long Christmas break when it suffered an inglorious, 63-0, defeat at the hands of the Nanaimo Hornets on Saturday at Village Park in Cumberland. To its credit the Kickers kept playing right ‘til the final whistle and in fact conceded fewer tries in the second –half than it did in the first half. In all the visitors scored thirteen tries and four conversions. Nanaimo wing Kailey Rintara topped the scorers for the visitors with a hat-trick of tries, all in the second-half, while fullback Arlene McGuff added two tries and two conversions with flanker Karli McFarlane adding two tries. Brenna Wilson, Kim Stewart, and Dana Neilsen scored singles with Cloe Chapdeline and Stewart kicking a conversion each. The well-drilled and well-disciplined Nanaimo team used its very experienced back-line to great effect in scoring most of its tries, however the Kickers forwards gave their opposite numbers a lesson in scrummaging as the locals held the edge in the set pieces. The Nanaimo backline continually brought their fullback McGuff into the line to add an extra man (woman?) which saw the Kicker back-line stretched to the limit and making desperate tackles to try and thwart further scores. One Kicker back-fielder did show surprisingly well in the loss in what was for her, her first game of rugby. Playing on the wing, Michelle Hamilton found more work than is usual in that position as she continually looked to be involved. She made telling tackles and ran well when she got the ball in...

Under the direction of recently appointed head coach Aaron L’Arrive, and paced by hat-trick of tries from wing Ross McLean, the Comox Valley Kickers began the Spring season with an impressive, six-try, 30-12 win over the Saanich Aggies in Victoria last Sunday. The Kickers dominated nearly all phases of play and played seventy percent of the match in the Saanich half. In the first-half alone the visitors registered five tries with out-side centre McLean finding his way over the line three times and with #8 Nathan Holley and wing James McKeachie adding singles. Saanich, a new team in the league this season whom the Kickers defeated 68-17 in the Fall, managed to perform better in the second-half, tightening up their defence to hold the Kickers to just one try from fly-half Doug Wynd. Toward the end of the contest the home team scored two tries and a conversion to make the score more respectable. “This was a good away-win for us,” said new coach L’Arrive after the game. “The Kickers stuck to the task and though they did perrhaps take their foot off the gas in the second-half, it was a good start to the new season.” L’Arrive singled out his three-try scorer Ross McLean for special mention. “Ross is new to the team this season and in this game he took his chances well and was rewarded. Lock Shayne Stuchbery put in his usual dynamic performance taking the ball and making the “hard yards.” It was also good to see Eli Cummins back playing inside-centre. He was very creative and set up a good many of the tries....
